THE GIFT OF BEFORE
"Nothing is more sacred than family." Grace turned to Liza who had tears running down her face. "What's wrong child?"
Liza looked at her mom, already knowing the truth. "You're not coming are you?" Liza said knowingly.
Sadly Grace shook her head. "No child… my life is here. Me and Cecil only have each other and my mama, my daddy and all those I loved are buried here. I can't leave them alone. However, James, Cecil's son will be moving to Michigan also. Not on your property but close enough so that you can go to him if you ever need him. He is anxious to start a new life also."
Grace stood and took a deep breath. She started to walk towards the bed. Out from under the bed she held up a painting. Her children gasped. It was a beautiful painting of herself. "Now…there is something you must do for me." She looked at her children and grandchildren then she pulled the cherished sapphire ring that Cecil had given her, off of her finger and handed it to Thomas. "As surely as I sit here in front of you and tell you all I have done, I will reappear again in a future generation to rectify all that was done wrong. For I have been told this by the Lord God Almighty. You must keep the painting of the land, this painting of me…and the written words of our family history in the safe place in the house you will build. You shall make my words known to every generation to come. I will return and I will be known by my ability to know that I've been here before." She looked at Thomas and said, "Tell every generation that when I return, give me my ring back because next time… there will be a different ending to my story."
I believe I… was talking, your highness!"
Ruby said in a stiff voice, with eyes that bore right into Gideons eyes. She held his gaze boldly.
Gideon found himself drawn to the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen. But that temper. He had never seen a lady stand up to a man like she was doing to him now. He thought about what he could do to make her even more angry so that she could keep staring at him with those alluring eyes. Maybe then, he would come up with the courage to kiss the most enticing lips he had ever seen on a female. Gideon stared at her as if she were the one who was crazy.
When Ruby saw how Gideon's eyes seemed to gaze right through her, as if she was speaking to no avail, she quietly said, "Did you even hear a word I said?"
When he silently shook his head no, Ruby decided to step away.
Still heartbroken over the break-up from her long time college boyfriend, Ruby headed home to Waverly, TN. When she arrived, her mom greeted her with hugs,
kisses and a good soul food meal. But after a few weeks at home, Ruby felt that life wasn't turning out the way she'd planned. Although she hadher history degree, she couldn't get a job. There were no teaching positions to be had or any other jobs, for that matter, in such a small town. She promised her parents that she would continue to look before considering leaving again to relocate in a larger town. In a moment of desperation, Ruby took a chance on an advertisement
from a college student named Donaldson Esrever.
Donaldson was studying to become a doctor and his wealth allowed him to
spend the majority of his time on his passion...traveling through time. His dream was that just maybe his findings would benefit CERN or some other scientific
explorations! He was looking for someone to take this trip with him since his professor refused to take another trip through time. After placing an ad in surrounding county newspaper's and on the internet, he finally got a response from a black female...whom Donaldson refused to consider due to his racist
inclinations. Truth be told, Donaldson had only lived the life of the white
privileged, so mingling with the lower likes of a black female in this historical adventure, did not sit well with him.
After getting past her doubts and fears, Ruby decided that the pay from this adventure would be enough to realize her dream of owning her own business and satisfy her love of history.
Neither Ruby nor Donaldson imagined that the advertisement would change their lives, for…ever.
Donaldson and Ruby were in for the surprise of their lives because history, in the 19th century, was the opposite of what theyhad learned. In this 19th century history, slavery was reversed. Neither would have ever imagined that Donaldson would be a slave that would bear the scars of the whip and Ruby, his master.
Nor that Donaldson would fall in love with a slave of mixed races and Ruby would travel through time to find the love of her life.
